Kuala Terengganu is the largest city as well as the state and royal capital of Terengganu state, Malaysia. On 1 January 2008, Kuala Terengganu was awarded city status. Kuala Terengganu is located about 500 kilometers northeast of Kuala Lumpur on a promontory surrounded on three sides by the South China Sea. The name means the "Terengganu Harbour", referring to the broad expanse of the Terengganu River estuary which empties into the ocean at this point.

Culture & Heritage

Kota Lama Duyung is located on Pulau Duyong Kecil. It is an architecture wonder built in the 1920's. While most of the local abodes are normal wooden traditional houses, Kota Lama Duyung was constructed with bricks and wood, based largely on the traditional Malays elements, with a hint of British influence, a burgeoning Islamic consideration. Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque is built on a floating platform, giving it a unique perspective from all facets. The design of the mosque reflects a subtle Islamic influence combined with local features, incorporating the use of marble, ceramics, mosaic works and bomanite paving.


Places of interest in Kuala Terengganu include Chinatown, Pasar Payang (Central Market), the Sultan's Palace, Pulau Duyong and the latest attraction is Crystal Mosque in Pulau Wan Man.

Food & Drink

Kuala Terengganu also famous for its 'keropok lekor losong' and traditional dishes 'nasi dagang'. Keropok lekor, a kind of fish sausage served with chili sauce, is a must-try. You can ask the receptionist for the nicest keropok lekor in the town. Catch some local foods around Night Market. Find one near Dataran Shahbandar on Friday night, as it is one of the biggest night market in town.


Local fabrics such as silk and batik sarongs can be found in Pasir Payang Market. In Pasar Besar (Big Bazaar) and the covered open-air market across the street, you can buy some delicious fresh fruits.
