According to an oral traditional, over centuries ago, religious scholars sailed across the Malay straits to spread the religion of Islam. In the year 1730s, a group of religious scholars passed through the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia on their way to Pattani in Thailand. Unfortunately, their boat suffered a leakage and experienced some difficulties. The scholars in the boat pledged that should they be brought to the shore safely, they will build a mosque immediately to reminisce the incident. Their wish was granted, and the scholars landed safely at Kampung Laut, Tumpat.
